PAT’S BLOG #1!

When I was a teenager, my family lived on the Taylor Ranch, the 5000-acre cattle ranch that is known as Wood Ranch development today.

Everyone just called Royal Avenue “the back road.”  Los Angeles Avenue was “the highway.”

In fact, the “back road” was Pitts Road from First Street west.  The road that stretched from Los Angeles Avenue, south to the entrance to the Taylor Ranch, was Kujawsky Road.  So my brother and I, and the Robertsons and workers’ kids for the Sinaloa Ranch caught the school bus at Kujawsky and Pitts!   [Both Pitts and Kujawsky were landowners along those streets.]

Eventually they simply called the whole “back road” Royal. Later on, Mrs. A.G. Wood asked the county to rename Kujawsky to Madera Road.   [Madera means “wood” in Spanish.]

And that is my historical info for this time!

The Taylor Ranch, now known as Wood Ranch, just before development in 1982. That barn yonder…that barn was moved just before the development and is now located at Strathearn Historical Park and Museum.

The corner of Kujawsky & Pitts in March 1959. Pat Havens remembers ‘catching the bus on the corner of Kujawsky and Pitts’ when she lived on the Taylor Ranch.
