Strathearn Park Docent Since 1975

Sharon Pierce

My parents moved us to Santa Susanna in 1962. I commuted over the Pass Road to Pierce College and my part time job. After about eight months the quiet and the distance got the better of me. So, back to the Valley and my friends, pledging never to live in the Simi Valley again. I was married to Jack (whom I had met while working at Cleveland High School in Reseda) in 1968. We purchased our first and only home in Santa Susanna a mile from my parents home. We are happy in Simi Valley and thru the years have been very active in the community. Many years were spent with PTA, Room Mother activities, soccer, 4-H and numerous dog activities.

Our son Jon was born in 1972 (many of the docents watched him grow up). In 1973 my former room mate, Marilyn Cameron asked me to go with her to Pat Havens first History of Simi Valley class so Pat would have enough students. As a History major in college I was more than eager to attend. We went on to be among the first guides (docents) at Strathearn Park. At that time we were only open on the first Sunday of each month. We had two docents in the Strathearn House, one docent in the Colony House and one docent in the Library. When Jon was 4 years old he became the docent for our Farm Equipment and enjoyed his job. He became friends with some of our gentlemen "Old Timers" and loved listening to their stories. (Jon is now married and waiting for the arrival of his first child.)

It has been amazing, watching the park grow thru the years. Enjoying our many activities and friends, both old and new. I still enjoy the park on the first Sunday of every month. As many of you know I am still breeding, showing and training dogs. Many of you have met our youngest Rhodesian Ridgeback, "Madison". Among her many skills she shines as a Therapy Dog and enjoys occasional work at the Historical Park. (Dog in the photo is her mother.)

If we haven't me yet, stop by the park on the first Sunday of the month. Or perhaps we will meet at our Tea or the Ghost Tour, or any one of our great Park activities.
